My Life is My Studio (eps 5) - Devotion in Practice: Art, Aging, and DJ Magic
Hey there! In this video, I'm opening up about my creative devotion over the past 18 months.. It's been quite an adventure: from launching the school and a new yearlong program to learning how to DJ! All of this has me thinking about the intersection of creativity, aging, and growth!
I'm also super excited to tell you more about our first ever symposium: The Crone Conversations. It will feature recorded interviews and DJ mixes by older women, culminating in a class to discuss and explore our own experiences of and feelings about aging.
In this video, I also share with you a technique that I learned in the theatre that is so helpful when looking for that sweet spot of truth and imagination. ...

Brilliant idea! Starting on junk journaling & this is a great idea for using magazines that have been chopped up a bit.
Yes! It's a great way to make the most out of those mags. I hope you enjoy it!
Thank you Jamie, you are always an inspiration! I am struggling with getting older at the moment too, but being able to express myself better and better makes aging exciting for me!
I'm so glad this is meaningful to you too! What a journey we are on.
Love it
Thank you!
This was an inspirational presentation in so many ways: I am completely on board with your discussion of aging as a woman and truly look forward to the events you have created; I am in awe of your DJ journey and continue to enjoy the fruits of your intense labour through my experience of your mix; and I will participate in anything you offer because you create an environment of comfort mixed with challenge while you embody mentorship and guidance like no one else out there.
Beautiful
I am so glad you liked it!
I am eager to join you for the Crone Conversations and hopefully the class. I need community that is willing and able to explore what getting older means for us as women and for me individually.
I'm so glad this is speaking to you, Janet, and am so glad you are interested in taking part. I look forward to the conversation!
It makes me calmer when I think of we are growing older together, Jamie ❤
I've been feeling that too, Lola!
Stunning use of photos and placement. Loved it, very inspirational!❤❤❤
Thank you! That mad my day!
I’m so looking forward to the Crone Conversations. And the concept of “given circumstances” is surprisingly liberating. Life’s limitations have been challenging for so long, but thinking of them in this way and “now what can I do?” is such an energizing reframe. Thank you for that!
I'm so glad the idea of given circumstances is helpful! It has been a powerful reframe for me too. And yay, I'm so glad you're looking forward to The Crone Conversations!
Lots in this for me today, not just the crone conversations but also the idea of given circumstances and the question "now what I can do". Plus the idea of intensity and the need for the expression of that. I really feel that and the idea of finding expression for this through a relationship with music is very exciting to me. Thank you as ever for your sharing and inspiration.
I'm so glad. The given circumstances framework has made such a difference for me too. And that intensity, that's one of the reasons I want to create spaces for us to dance - so we have a place to let it all out!
Wanna hear about divine coincidences Jamie? Many moons ago, we found one another’s blogs (I was Lillithmaiden then Lillithmother back then) AND I attended one of your vision board workshops in TO. I think I was even following your sister Susie back then before she moved out east. Yes, maaaannnnnyyyyy moons 😂 Creativity has remained an ember in my life but recently it’s ignited and become a flame that’s being encouraged by more divine support in all forms of real life nudges. I lost track of you and your creative service back then but lo and behold here you are again suddenly appearing on YT as one of the people I subscribe to and I don’t even remember when I started following you here! See, divine coincidence 💫 I’ve no doubt that I was supposed to find you again and so I’ll go find you on IG too and who knows what will happens, but whatever does it’s clearly meant to be! Cheers to growth, crone wisdoms (I’m a 57 yr old crone now) and wow, DJing!! Creativity expression knows no bounds and gives 0 f***s about our age 😂 Cheers Jamie ✌🏻💫
Very exciting! Looking forward to learning more about it.
Thanks so much, Angie! It's going to be a very dynamic fall!
I'm so excited for Crone Conversations and to hear more of your dance mixes. 🥰
I'm so glad, Diana! I'm excited too. I can't wait to share more!
Lots of goodness here, Jamie. So lovely , as always, to see your face and hear your wisdom. ❤
Thanks, Lorraine! It's a joy to hang out with you 💖
You've given me loads of ideas. Just what I need
I'm so glad! And thank you for letting me know.
Hello! First time listener. That was a aww inspiring talk. Thank you so very much for reminding me what was important. I feel a little less lost, much braver, and satisfied knowing I can be at peace with myself. ❤
Hey there, welcome! I'm so glad our paths have crossed. Your words have really touched my heart. Thank you for taking the time to comment.
This showed up in my "you may like" suggestions and I do/did. I have "liked" this video and subscribed to your channel and have already started a magazine journal inspired by this video. I have four Daphne's Diary magazines that I have taken half if not more of the contents out of and am going to glue/tape those together and use those. I'm looking forward to working in it. Thank you for posting this video! :)
How wonderful!! I'm so glad we've connected and am thrilled that you are going to try a magazine journal. Let me know how it goes!

I love this so so much. Nothing too fancy just pretty to look at.
That's something about this that makes it so much more doable, isn't there!

Thank you for THIS! Sometimes we need reminders that we ARE doing enough, that doing better takes time. I'm grateful for this perspective. 😊
Thanks so much, Holly! I'm glad this reminder made a difference!
Lovely Jamie! I have followed your work for so long and am so happy to have you back. I have every yearbook from number one and could never do without them. I connected so much with your thoughts and where you are. I too am just braving a return, which is why I am only just here... So many ageing shocks (maybe charges to the system, electric, even); had an early menopause 13 years ago, no-one talked about it then, I am so glad they are now, it was life/death hard to be honest. But time whirls us forward and we have to hold on somehow. In the past three years I have lost four of my closest friends, they were so young, and last year I lost my job and my best friend had a stroke, she did not recover, she was only 60. Has hit me so hard, am just emerging after many months. So much else to say, yes, to dancing, yes, to DJing, yes to music, yes to life, somehow. All of it on my radar too, like some unexpected sort of osmosis! I look forward to walking the journey with you again my lovely friend who I have never 'met' but who I still cherish! Thankyou.
Hey there! Oh, it is so lovely to be here with you. I'm so very sorry that you have been through so much. It is so good to hear that now you are braving the return, that you are finding inspiration and saying so many yeses. I look forward to dancing with you - and I am sending you so much love.
WOW that is amazing. It has given me hope to create my next Scrapbook. (I have just finished my first one but it is nothing like yours. My mistake was to put one picture on each page but now I know really how to create my next one. I am 80 years old and have always loved and craft. I have my own little craft room which was my son’s bedroom many years ago. It is now my little sanctuary. Thank you again so much for taking the time to inspire other scrapbookers. June Rose xxxx
Hi there, June Rose. I am delighted that you are inspired and this will give you some ideas for your next one! How wonderful that you have created a little sanctuary for you and your creativity. Have fun creating!
Absolutely beautiful! loved the picture book from beginning to end, I was so caught up in each and every page and the music lovely as well. I have so many beautiful pictures of things I love, and the pictures that are just beautiful I could not toss them out now that I've seen your flip-through I will try to make one for myself without overthinking where the pictures should be placed. LOVE this idea soooo much sooo happy I've kept my beautiful magazine images. Thanks for sharing.💓
Oh, that absolutely made my day. Thank you so much! It's such a simple and fulfilling practice. I hope you have a great time making yours!
@@theschoolofcreativemagic You’re so very welcome, I’ve already started and love each moment when I have time it’s so relaxing, hope to see your creativity again on UTube. So many pictures and little time in a day I still make it happen. TFS again 💜.
Thank you! I'm new at crafting and this really helped me with where I need to start. 🌼
How wonderful!! I am delighted to hear it.
Great way to make a journal using magazines you love and keeping the beautiful pages you love as well; did you remove some pages and glue pages together?. I would love to make a journal using your creative ideal. I would have to restrained myself from adding pockets and other item I'm used to adding in my alligator mouth journals. Thanks for sharing love your creativity.💓
Yes, it really helps to remove some pages. Often I use magazines where I've already taken out some of the images for other projects, including dreamboards. And hey, don't hold yourself back. Go for it! <3
Thank you for your encouragement and inspiration, Jamie. You have made such an impact on my creative practice ❤
Caroline, this means so much to me. Thank you so much for these beautiful words!
This really spoke to me today. I’m working on my second novel in my series and tomorrow when I step to my computer I’ll be keeping this in mind. Thank you, Jamie! 💙
How wonderful! I'll be cheering you on!! ((hugs))
Hugs to you Jamie!❤❤❤
Right back atcha!
❤❤❤
<3
Thank you for the gentle encouragement Jamie. ❤
Always my pleasure, Angella!
WOW! I can’t believe the “kittens” are 9 years old! That means I’ve been following you for probably close to 13 years..?! 😍 I too am turning to the wisdom and magic of the natural world as I seek to find peace, acceptance and positivity in my inevitable aging experience. One “mantra” I continue to embrace is my dear grandmas response whenever anyone complained about growing older which was “consider the alternative”…. She lived to be a week shy of her 99th birthday. ❤
Oh, my gosh! It is amazing how time moves, isn't it? I can't quite believe it either. That is beautiful you continue to be inspired by your grandma! What wisdom she has imparted <3
captions, pls & thanks
Thanks for letting me know. I always set them to be on. It often just takes RUclips a while to catch up. I'll go double-check all is well.
So happy to have you back here Jamie. You bring so much comfort to my soul.
Thank you so much! That means a lot to me 💖
This notion of gentle discernment has become a powerful part of my writing practice. It's truly empowering. ❤
It's powerful alchemy - not having to give up one for the other! Here's to how it nurtures your writing and you!
I LOVE your perspective of the sun and moon dancing. I always feel occurrences like the eclipses are special, but all the hype in the media just seem to drown out that special-ness and magic. I will always hold that image of the sun and moon dancing in my mind's eye ❤
I'm so glad that image resonated with you too. Looking inside is a great antidote to hype! Thanks for taking the time to share. <3
💙
Thank you again for this video. 💙 the aging stuff resonates with me. I’m tiring 45 this year and over the last couple years I’ve noticed changes physically but also creatively. The creative avenues I used to travel have lost their luster. I’ve yet to determine if this is a temporary change or a shift in some new unknown direction. But regardless, it’s scary because I feel like I’m a bit lost. I’ve taken up journaling again in hopes I can discover my path but these videos are definitely getting me to think and feel. And for that I am grateful.
Angie, thanks so much for sharing your experience. Journaling is a great place to turn. And honestly,, it helped me a great deal to find out if I was perimenopausal. I had no idea that this would impact my outlook so deeply, but it did. I have no doubt your creative spirit will find a way to express herself throughout your whole life!
@@theschoolofcreativemagic you’re welcome! And yes the perimenopause stage of life is one that continues to provide new and surprising changes. But it’s always comforting to find others who are navigating the changes too. Thank you for your supportive words!
Welcome back 💙 great to see and hear you. Excited for what’s to come.
Thanks so much, Angie!!
A fabulous way to look at any celestial event - to go inwards. Love this ❤ I also feel like a solar eclipse is the most visual example of pressing the reset button 😅
Is it ever!! Great point <3
I so love the idea of infinite fresh starts. It's very freeing.
I have absolutely found it to be so.
Thank you for your wonderful and inspiring perspectives. 🥰 I love that the Sun joined in the conversation. 🤗
Thanks, Diana! I really loved that he did too. Thanks so much for being here.
Thanks for the reminder that we are all artists! Happy to see you again
Thank you! It's great to be back.
I have listened to this several times now. As someone who is older, I so dearly appreciate seeing the truth and wonder of aging mirrored back at me. Plus, I just love your voice! You may even get me to dance!
I am beaming thinking of dancing together! Thank you so much for your lovely words.
Thank you for your beautiful vulnerability and your luminous presence. I've been following you for well over 10 years and have taken many of your classes. It's always an honor to follow your journey. BTW, I'm 59 and always thought you were about 20 years younger than I am!
Sandy, what a joy that we've been connected for so long. That truly moves me. And oh, my now, we are closer in age than that!
Jamie I have been following you for 13 years. When I found you I was so in need of a guiding light I had just turned 53. Floundering. Your voice calms me and I find hope in everything you say. And you know I absolutely adore the view from your window and the beautiful trees. Thank you for being so generous to all of us! ❤
Karen, has it been that long?! How truly amazing. I am so grateful and honoured to have supported you!
Hi Jamie - So, this is comical: Right after your Episode 2 ended, another came up with a guy telling me "Hey, here is what you can do to slow or even reverse aging!" Something I could purchase of course. It really drove home for me that society has an angle on aging, which you discussed in the episode. I was thinking about the labels we put on ourselves and others, eager to give something a name to capture (our take on) its essence. And I thought no, just as acknowledging myself as an artist is an inside job, so is my acceptance of where I am on my journey through life. As you noted in your Sunday newsletter "crone" and other words are simply more labels. I loved that you said the sun shines on us today the same way it did when we were 4 yo. Thank you for providing a welcoming community and one that acknowledges each person as a treasure unto themselves. Happy Easter and love to the studio kittens!
Oh, Anne, isn't that so telling?! Wow, the algorithm tells the tale! Thank you for what you've shared - I am celebrating the treasure that is YOU! lots of love, Jamie
It was soothing to hear your message today and it stirred something in me. I am older than you, turning 68 in a few weeks, and I still struggle with the old woman who lives in my mirror. I’ve told friends if I never looked in the mirror I am still a much younger version of myself although my body begs to differ. I lost both parents years ago, lost my sister and my brother is now in an assisted living facility so even though I’m the youngest I now find myself as the Matriarch of the family. Mind blowing!
"The Old Woman Who Lives in My Mirror" sounds like an incredible story or poem. We so often find our way through some act of creation. What you've shared is also a big part of the picture isn't it - it's not just us but the world we know, including our loved ones, that change and go. It's wild that so many of us go through this and yet we feel alone on a road with no map. Thank you for sharing your experience.
I look forward to your videos! Welcome back! I was there when you brought the kittens home. I’m a huge “cat” lady; and, by bringing these felines into the picture, I knew I just had to follow your channel. And I’m so glad I have been for the past 10 years. Thank you, from a grateful 76 yo.
Thank you so much for the welcome and for remembering those early days with the Studio Kittens. I'm glad we've been cat ladies together for so long!
Welcome back, Jamie! I have missed your infectious laugh, your wisdom and your glow. You are not alone in the uncomfortable age journey...It seems like a painful joke that just as we are growing beyond all the things that have held us captive or slowed our development, this new challenge presents itself in the School of Life.
Thank you for the warm welcome back. And yes, you have touched on such an important part of this - just as we've grown beyond those things... It seems that there's always more learning to do - we're just at the graduate level!
Thank you Jamie again!!! Aging and being block because we want our path to be a certain way really spoke to me. A big hug!!
My pleasure! I'm glad there was something here for you! ((bighugs))
